What is covered in the KLA's?
Mathematics
The Mathematics key learning area helps students to understand knowing about mathematics, knowing how to do mathematics and knowing when and where to use it. Students study the mathematical strands of Number, Patterns and Algebra, Measurement, Chance, Data and Spatial concepts.
When students can connect mathematical ideas, their understanding is deeper and more lasting. Connections to a child's work or play and to other learning areas makes maths relevant and easier to learn.
Science
Studying science helps students understand the nature of the world around them and their place in that world. It promotes the development of personal attributes such as perseverance, cooperation, collaboration and creativity and engages students in distinctive ways of thinking about and explaining events and phenomena.
Through participation in authentic, 'real-world' science experiences, students develop the essential knowledge, attitudes and skills that help them become active and informed citizens, capable of making personal decisions.
English
The English key learning area develops understandings about literary, mass media and everyday texts, language use and associated literacy practices. It allows student to explore and examine ways of knowing, being, doing, thinking, feeling and interacting in diverse situations, times and places, within and beyond their direct experiences.
In English students develop:
- The capacity to speak, listen, read, view, write and shape to communicate effectivly in a diverse range of situations.
- A sound grasp of language forms and features and textual structures and the capacity to apply these to the interpretation and construction of communications.
- A broad knowledge of a range of literature and other texts, including multimodal texts
- Understandings of how texts shape and are shaped by the knowledge, values and practices of diverse social and cultural groups Knowledge of the qualities of language and ideas that contribute to the enjoyment of increasingly complex texts.
Studies of Society and Environment
The learning area of Studies of Society and Environment helps young people to understand how people's life experiences are the result of particular social, cultural, economic and environmental relationships that characterise communities at particular times and places.
The values, concepts and skills of the learning area are drawn from a range of studies.
Studies include:
Environment Aboriginal Futures
Cultural Gender Asia
Torres Strait Islands Peace
Technology
Technology education provides students with an understanding of the processes and practices that lead to the design and development of new technological products and innovations within society.
Learning in the Technology key learning area is often structured around 'design challenges'. These provide students with real life and lifelike problem solving situations to which they can respond. In Technology students often tackle design challenges in collaborative teams, working together to design and develop a wide range of viable solutions using materials, information and systems.
As a result of their technology education students will be better able to:
- understand the nature and consequences of technological change within society and respond appropriately.
- participate in the design and development of innovative technological products across a range of present and possible future contexts
- respond appropriately to, ethical dilemmas caused by the intended and unintended impacts of technological change on people and the environment.
In Years 1 to 7, Technology education often provides an integrating device for learning as students draw on knowledge from across the curriculum to design and develop products for themselves and others. Often this results in students employing their understanding of Mathematics, Science, English or SOSE to generate and create solutions to real life and lifelike problem solving situations in which they design, construct and test their ideas within the classroom.
Health & Values including Physical Education
The Years 1 - 10 Health and Physical Education key learning area reflects the dynamic and multi-dimensional nature of health and recognises the significance of physical activity in the lives of individuals and groups within Australian society.
The key learning area offers students opportunities to develop knowledge, processes, skills and attitudes necessary for making informed decisions about:
- Promoting the health of individuals and communities;
- Developing concepts and skills for physical activity;
- Enhancing personal development.
